At the end of the 2014 show season I met the owners of these two cars at a meeting in Selkirk. They were both interesting, home built cars, lined up for features in Retro Ford and PPC magazines.
Period Correct MK2
Firstly we have this very smart MK2. Built with historic motorsport in mind but “too clean to rally”. Fitted with a hot Pinto and Webber carbs it drives an LSD via a Trans-X box and AP clutch. Weighing in at 890kg with 200bhp on tap, this is a fast Escort built the way it would have been in the 80’s.
The ‘Monscort’ MK1 V6
From one end of the Spectrum to the other now. With absolutely no regard for originality Alan Blaikie has created a Frankenstein’s monster.
With a MK1 Escort 1300 shell, Sierra XR4x4 floorpan, Mondeo 24v engine, that makes three donor cars purchased to build what you see here.
Add in some serious fabrication skills and ingenious eBay, cross brand, parts scavenging and a DIY paint job using Daytona Yellow tractor paint and you have one of the most inventive Escort’s ever built.
Track down a PPC back issue for the full story.
